Stop 42 / State 25: Wisconsin Dells, WI
For todays 140 mile leg, we decided that we had had it with Illinois' expensive, poorly maintained I-90 toll road. I set the GPS to avoid all toll roads and was surprised to see that the route was both shorter and faster (I have no idea why the GPS would choose the longer toll road route but then that's the kind of thing that we've been dealing with with this new Magellan). Our route along rural farm roads was very enjoyable. Most of the roads weren't even on our map so quick-draw Kristen had to work a miracle when we suddenly found ourselves crossing into Wisconsin.
We didn't hit I-90 until we were well inside Wisconsin. We'll be staying close to I-90 for quite a while now, until we turn South for Yellowstone.
Wisconsin Dells is another one of those places that I wish I knew how to identify in advance and avoid. Our RV Park is nice and wooded but Wisconsin Dells itself is a city of roller coasters, water parks (indoor and outdoor), Waterski shows and jet-boat rides. All of the usual gift shops, arcades and fast food restaurants are here. I think that maybe, if there's a Ripley's Believe It or Not in town, more research may be required (we've seen them in nice places like San Antonio and St. Augustine too so I can't automatically rule a place out because it has a Ripley's).
Here's tonight's site:
