Day 68: Union, IL

Stop 41 / State 24: Union, IL

Something that we've learned about KOA Kampgrounds is that you shouldn't read too much into the names.  Earlier, we stayed at the New York City North / Newburgh KOA in Plattekill, NY. That's in the Catskills, 85 miles from New York City. Later, we stayed at the Front Royal RV Campground. It was an ex-KOA Kampground and enough old signage was around to know that it was once the Front Royal / Washington D.C. West KOA. Front Royal is about 75 miles from Washington D.C. For the next 3 nights, we're at the Chicago Northwest KOA in Union, IL It's about 55 miles from Chicago. We knew that going in and weren't able to find anything closer to Chicago. Still, the naming is interesting.

Today's 211 mile hop took us up I-65 to I-90, both terribly pot hole ridden roads. To add insult to injury, I-90 had about $30 in tolls between Gary, IN and Union, IL. At one toll booth, where they charged us $16.80, I was tempted to say "Thank you sir! May I have another!" when they returned my change. I-90 took us right through downtown Chicago's bumper-to-bumper traffic and into a 35 mile construction zone. Worth every cent. I'd recommend it to anyone (actually, we feel like they should have paid us to drive on that road).

We didn't see a "Welcome to Illinois" sign today (that's about when we were welcomed with a $16.80 toll so maybe that was it). We did catch this "Welcome to Chicago" sign, however.

Here's our campsite. Tomorrow and the next day we will be catching the train from our local station and doing some sightseeing in Chicago.
