Day 67: Thorntown, IN

Stop 40 / State 23: Thorntown, IN

Before I get into today's events, I want to return to something that I talked about a couple of days ago. I mentioned that Barren County is a dry county. I didn't mention that we discovered this during our attempt to buy a sixpack of beer. Yesterday, on our way into Mammoth Cave National Park, it occurred to me that, technically, the park is not a part of the state. If that's true, then it can't be a part of Barren County either. After our cave tour, we spotted a store at one of the campgrounds and went in. Sure enough, you can buy beer in a national park that is surrounded by a dry county.

Today's 237 mile trip was longer than usual and took us across the Indiana state line.

We've been passed by a lot of wide loads but a couple of loads today took the cake. We were cruising along in the slow lane at our usual 55 MPH when I spotted these monsters in the rearview. This stretch of freeway was 3 lanes wide and 2 of these beasts flew by us in the 2 faster lanes at about 70. Amazing!

Our Magellan had another fine day. I've mentioned before that our Good Sam special edition Magellan has the entire Good Sam RV Guide in its points of interest database. We set our destination today from that POI database. Magellan had us leave the freeway about 8 miles too soon and it then sent us 10 miles East into the corn fields before it announced that we had arrived.

Fortunately, the hard copy Good Sam RV Guide has instructions for getting to each park and we eventually found our way to where we needed to be. As we sit here, Magellan still insists that we are 14 miles from here (as the crow flies - longer by road).
