Day 87: Prospect, OR

Stop 55: Prospect, OR (near Crater Lake)

126 miles today to this 2 night stop. Along the way, we crossed the Rogue River so we parked in a convenient pullout and hiked down to the river.

The Rogue originates at nearby Crater Lake. We're sure that it must get much bigger than this before it reaches the ocean:

Once we got ourselves installed at our site in Prospect, we went exploring. We'll have all day tomorrow to get to Crater Lake and other places in the region so this afternoon, we stayed local.

The Rogue flows very near our campground and the trail starts just behind our site. That was our first exploration:

The trail led to a dam that is, apparently, the first dam on the Rogue:

Next, we started to walk through the town of Prospect. When it started to thunder and drop occasional huge drops of water, we decided to for back for the car. We drove through the town of Prospect. Parking the car, we took a short hike out to a point where we could see Pearsony Falls, which is just downstream from the dam:

After hiking back to the car, we drove to the bridge that was above Pearsony Falls in the last picture and took a picture downstream at the beginning of the Gorge:

The managers at our RV Park had mentioned the Historic Prospect Hotel so we decided to stop in on our way back. Its restaurant has a good reputation so we asked the woman at the front desk if we could see the menu. She not only let us see the menu, she made us a copy and then took us on a tour of every unoccupied room in the hotel. This 1888 hotel was originally a stage coach stop between Medford, OR and Crater Lake. It boasts that Teddy Roosevelt, Zane Grey, Jack London, John Muir, Herbert Hoover and William Jennings Bryan have all been guests at the hotel.

 

We've made dinner reservations for tomorrow night.
