Day 80: Gardiner, MT

Stop 49: Gardiner, MT

Before I start, I meant to mention that the park that we stayed in last night (Billings) had had baseball sized hail the night before and was still making repairs when we arrived. The hail in our next destination was all over the news in Sheridan the night before and we were a little bit apprehensive. Fortunately, we dodged that bullet.

Today, we followed the Yellowstone River 171 miles. Our park overlooks the Yellowstone River and is in sight of Yellowstone's original North gate.

At one point on our trip, we were no sooner warned by a sign to watch for wild animals when a herd of horses came dashing across the road. We suspect that they were probably escapees.

We also saw a herd of bison but they appeared to be fenced in so we suspect that they we're being raised for meat.

Took a couple of pictures of the Yellowstone from the Rest Area where we stopped for lunch.

Once we were settled in, we took off for the Park. The last time that we were here, we stayed at the Old Faithful Lodge. We saw a lot of the park but only saw a bit of Mammoth Hot Springs on our way out of the park. Our goal today was to get a good look at Mammoth Hot Springs, since it's fairly close to the North Gate. Tomorrow, we'll see much more of the park and then, on Monday, we'll pull the trailer through the park to the South gate and go through Grand Teton National Park to Jackson Hole.

Here's the North gate:

At Mammoth Hot Springs, this is Liberty Cap (a dormant hot spring cone):

We saw this rattlesnake near the trail:

Finally, today's trailer picture.
