Day 24: Savannah, GA

Stop 20 / State 10: Savannah, GA

More nice weather today (no sign of Bubba) for our 126 mile drive to Savannah.

Our park is small and heavily wooded and our campsite is huge.  Strangely, the office is in an antique store that is only open a few hours each day.  As soon as we got set up, we headed into town.

Savannah has a very touristy water front that didn't hold much interest for us.  The first couple of pictures are from there.

Savannah is built around a grid of at least 22 squares.  And we set out to see as many as we could.  It was very hot and humid and we didn't come close to seeing them all.

Salzburger Square:

Reynolds Square:

Johnson Square:

Telfair Square:

Chippewa Square (Forrest Gump's park bench was at the side of this square):

Madison Square:

Monterey Square:

Along the way, we saw a few interesting sights.  Here are a couple of pictures of Paula Deen's restaurant:

We passed a little coffee shop that was apparently where Jenny worked in Forrest Gump:

The highlight of the day was our tour of the Mercer-Williams House.  We've both read 'Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil" and we have the movie as a part of our Clint Eastwood Collection.  It was kind of amazing to see just how accurate that story was.  The locals apparently consider Jim Williams to be a hero for preserving as much of old Savannah as he did (he personally restored over 50 Savannah homes).  The man that he was accused of (and was probably guilty of) murdering was kind of a low life and, apparently, the town rejoiced at his acquital.  All that aside, the man's business was the collection of rare antiques, and he kept the best for his home.  It was pretty amazing.

Finally,  here's our daily trailer shot:
